Family tradition in furniture design
Flexform is a family business that has been around for several generations. The company began in 1959 when the brothers Romeo, Pietro and Agostino Galimberti opened an artisan workshop in the northern Italian town of Meda, not far from Milan. In the following years, this workshop was expanded to include a showroom. The brothers presented the sofas and armchairs they designed in their salon ‘Flexform di Galimberti’. This furniture soon found its way into private villas and public buildings in Milan, including the La Scala opera house. Flexform Italia began exporting its designer furniture to other European countries in 1970. Today, the manufacturer is active worldwide.
Luxury with subtle design
The creation of luxury furniture with elegant designs is the company’s guiding principle. However, they do not opt for flashy design; they aim for subtlety. There is no room for excess in the design and materials of a Flexform sofa, Flexform chair, Flexform armchair or Flexform coffee table. The brand itself speaks of ‘discreet elegance’, emphasising nuance, simplicity and good taste. Nonetheless, the furniture in the Flexform catalogue is designed down to the smallest detail. Wood and steel appear in many designs. The upholstery materials used include linen, cotton, velvet, cashmere and leather. In general, Flexform seating is available in several types and colours of upholstery.
Specialised in sofas
Although you can also purchase a Flexform armchair, Flexform side table or Flexform bed, the company specialises in sofas. Many of them were created by the top Italian designer Antonio Citterio. He was one of the brand’s most prolific designers for 40 years. Among the sofas that Citterio added to the range are the Flexform Max from 1983, the Flexform Lifesteel from 2006 and the Flexform Soft Dream from 2010. The Max stands out with its tubular steel construction, curved design and almost floating backrest. Characteristic of the Flexform Lifesteel are the spacious seats, while the Soft Dream has a functional and versatile corner design. Citterio also designed the extraordinary A.B.C.D. Flexform armchair. It won the Compasso d’Oro Award in 2016. Other important Flexform designers include Paolo Nava, Joe Colombo, Carlo Colombo, Daniel Libeskind, Giulio Manzoni, Sergio Asti and Guido Rosati.
