Started as a furniture workshop
Cassina was founded in 1927 by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina. That year, they opened a workshop in Meda, near Milan, where they specialised in the production of coffee tables. Initially, they created their tables and furniture themselves. After the Second World War, however, Cassina took a different path. The design studio and the production area became two separate business units in 1948, and external designers were increasingly used. The idea behind this was to develop new, innovative design concepts with which the brand could distinguish itself from other furniture manufacturers. In the period that followed, the company frequently worked with the Italian designer Gio Ponti. Ponti’s lightweight Superleggera chair from 1957 is considered the crowning glory of his work for Cassina, and it’s still in production.
Top people of the design world
The 1960s was an important decade for the brand. In 1964, for example, the company acquired the rights to leading furniture by the Swiss-French design team Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeaneret. Cassina has since been the exclusive manufacturer of chairs such as the LC1, LC2 and LC3, designed by these iconic designers around 1928. Charlotte Perriand’s range includes a variety of sofas, chairs, tables and cabinets. The furniture of Le Corbusier, Perriand and Jeaneret is part of the Cassina I Maestri collection. The collection also includes dining chairs, armchairs, sofas, storage furniture and tables by other historical designers, including Gerrit Rietveld, Franco Albini and Frank Lloyd Wright. Some of the Cassina chairs and tables from the Maestri collection date back to the early twentieth century.
Cassina Contemporanei made by modern designers
In addition to a classic Cassina chair, this brand is also the place to be for design furniture that was decisive for the second half of the last century. These have been brought together in the Cassina Contemporanei collection. The range includes chairs, tables, benches and cabinets by Vico Magistretti, Philippe Starck, Mario Bellini, Tobia Scarpa, Patricia Urquiola, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and others. Thanks to the wide variety of designers and periods, the Cassina range offers a comprehensive overview of what has been produced in design furniture since 1900. So there is a Cassina table, sofa, chair or storage unit for every taste and style.
Innovation as the driving force
The connoisseur’s eye for design history does not mean that Cassina only focuses on the past. History and tradition may play an important role, but the company is also known for its innovation and forward-looking approach. Cassina’s research team is always looking for novelties, and on the production floor, they actively use contemporary techniques and materials. Sustainable design with the aim of making timeless products that last a lifetime is the basis. This is reflected in environmentally-friendly production processes, the reuse of materials and furniture that is easy to disassemble. However, they remain faithful to the atmosphere, style and concept of the original design. New Cassina chairs and tables, specially designed with the contemporary company philosophy in mind, are also launched regularly.
