Carl Hansen, the definition of Danish modern design

When it comes to design furniture, Denmark plays an important role. One manufacturer that has done much for 20th-century Danish design is Carl Hansen. The company made its name with the Carl Hansen CH24. The Wishbone chair is an icon of Danish modern design. Today, Hansen & Søn issues historical and contemporary classics that are loved for their functionality and quality.

Furniture maker with a vision

The history of Carl Hansen & Søn dates back to 1908 when the namesake and founder Hansen opened a furniture workshop on the Danish island of Funen. Right from the start, high-quality craftsmanship and fruitful collaborations with unique designers have formed the basis of Hansen design. One of the most important collaborations came about in 1949 when Danish designer Hans J. Wegner created his first furniture for Hansen & Søn. Wegner developed several successful chairs in the years that followed, including the CH24. His designs are still a significant part of the Carl Hansen chair collection.

Carl Hansen CH24 and CH25

With his sober and innovative chairs, Hans J. Wegner is known as the driving force behind Danish modern design. And his work has lost none of its strength. Wegner is the best-selling designer in the Carl Hansen showroom. To honour him, the company regularly releases re-issues of the CH24 Wishbone chair, which appeared in 1950. The chair owes its English name to the Y-shaped wooden construction in the semi-circular backrest. The seat consists of woven paper cord. This material had not been used for a design chair before. Shortly afterwards, the Carl Hansen CH25 went into production. With its seat and backrest made entirely of paper cord, the CH25 was pioneering at the time.

Danish design of pure simplicity

In addition to all the important Wegner chairs, Carl Hansen produces chairs by several other 20th-century designers. The range includes designs by Ole Wanscher, Frits Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Kaare Klint, Mogens Koch and Poul Kjærholm. The company ensures that the furniture classics they created in the past remain available to current audiences. However, Hansen doesn’t forget to highlight contemporary designers such as Thomas Bo Kastholmt, Naja Utzon Popov and Anker Bak. The manufacturer selects its designers carefully, always ensuring that they follow the core values of Danish design. Purity, simplicity, functionality and craftsmanship are typical of a Carl Hansen armchair or chair.
